In 1990 Philippe Starck designed the Juicy Salif for Alessi, it continues to be one of the most provocative designs in their catalog. The aluminum cast citrus squeezer – as revolutionary as it is surprisingly functional – was sketched in its essentials by Starck on a pizzeria napkin during a holiday by the sea in Italy.

"I received a napkin from Starck, on it among some incomprehensible marks (tomato sauce, in all likelihood) there were some sketches. Sketches of squid. They started on the left, and as they worked their way over to the right, they took on the unmistakable shape of what was to become the Juicy Salif. While eating a dish of squid and squeezing a lemon over it, Starck drew on the napkin his famous lemon squeezer." – Alberto Alessi

Starck has obtained many important acknowledgments such as the Grand Prix National de la Création Industrielle and the Honor Award of the American Institute of Architects, he considers himself "a Japanese architect, an American art director, a German industrial designer, a French artistic director, and an Italian furniture designer."

The Philippe Starck's Juicy Salif Citrus Juicer is included in The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston permanent collection. For more information on the Juice Salif Citrus Juicer, please visit the museum's collection page here: https://emuseum.mfah.org/objects/50486/juicy-salif
