Masterpieces from the Fayez S. Sarofim Collection: From Antiquity to Abstraction highlights 224 works from the private collection of Fayez S. Sarofim. This exhibition catalogue includes insights from the collector about how he built his collection, as well as extended captions that provide details about each of the featured works. Over the years, Mr. Sarofim has acquired artworks that reflect his cultural heritage, including ancient Egyptian statues and Coptic carvings and textiles, along with select European paintings by the likes of El Greco and Eugène Delacroix. In addition, he has acquired a great number of works from his adopted homeland, the United States. Not only does his collection encompass examples of Native American pottery and blankets, but it also provides an extensive overview of the development of American art from the 19th century through the 20th century through key paintings by such renowned artists as Mary Cassatt, William Merritt Chase, Childe Hassam, Robert Henri, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, George Inness, Maurice Prendergast, and John Singer Sargent, to name just a few. His holdings of modern and contemporary works are equally in-depth, encompassing works by Willem de Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, Henry Moore, Robert Motherwell, Kenneth Noland, Robert Rauschenberg, Joaquín Torres-García, and Andy Warhol, among many others. Overall, this publication is the first to showcase this incredible collection, bringing to light works that, because they are in private hands, are not often seen in public.
